WHACKY HOLIDAYS : September

This has been the fastest summer of my life, no doubt. Ben and I were out running errands and I almost panicked when we came across a turning tree. Don't get me wrong, I adore the fall, but that means winter is just around the corner... yikes! But for now, I'll do my best to enjoy this perfect autumn weather and celebrate accordingly. Without further ado (and late again, I apologize), here are your whacky September holidays:

September 10th : Swap Ideas Day

September 13th-18th : National Line Dancing WEEK!

September 13th : Fortune Cookie Day

September 16th : National Play Dough Day

September 16-18th : Beer Days (timely placed at the end of Line Dancing week, and more than one day I'm assuming for recovery...)

September 22nd : Elephant Appreciation Day

AUGUST

August is Romance Awareness Month, so celebrate how you will - whether it be romantically, or just being aware of romance's existence.

August 12th: Sewing Machine Day

August 17th: National Thrift Shop Day [I smell a contest brewing here...].

August 18th: Cupcake Day [Columbus-ians, RedBrownBlonde enjoyed some delicious cupcakes at Patty Cake's Bakery in Clintonville during our week of wonderfulness - we give them five stars!]

August 21st: Poet's Day I've got a poet - do you?

August 24th: National Waffle Day (in case you missed International Waffle Day, here's your second chance).

Did you and your significant other have a quarrel over which fine waffle establishment to visit? No worries, August 25th is National Kiss and Make-up Day.

August 29th: Whiskey Sour Day A coincidence that such a day concludes Romance Awareness Month? I think not.

JULY WHACKY HOLIDAYS

My only excuse for not posting July's wacky holidays earlier is that for the first two weeks of July I hadn't even realized it was July. And now it's almost August and I'm not ready for August. But alas - a few opportunities to take your mind off the fact that summer is passing all too quickly...

July 15th (I know, that day already happened, but this celebration is worth a rain check): Cow Appreciation Day.

July 20th Moon Day.

July 21st Junk Food Day. (I just spent 4 hours on the phone with internet tech support and thus have celebrated this day one day early)...

July 22nd Hammock Day. Yes, please.

July 26th All or Nothing Day.

July 28th National Milk Chocolate Day.

July 29th National Lasagna Day (RedBrownBlonde tried a new veggie lasagna recipe last week and it was absolutely delish -- we'll post that recipe soon!).

July 30th - in honor of Brown's big move: National Cheesecake Day.

July 31st Mutt's Day -- I am partial to this breed, myself.

A proposal for the overachiever who may not be able to remember every day, but would like to celebrate each occasion: Start the day right with a donut and a good ol' glass of milk. Now you're ready to sew up a pretty little picnic blanket. When complete, put on some shades as you make your way down to the farmers market - at which you will buy your choice of fresh fruits and veggies (strawberries and rhubarbs included) for the picnic that you'll be packing later that afternoon. Head on down to the park, tasty treats in-tow and enjoy the live accordion performance. Forgot change to tip the musicians? A candy bar should do. Oh, don't forget to take photos.

May 7th: Military Spouse Day

Just like to take a moment and say thanks not only to the men and women who have dedicated their lives to our country, but also to their families. Today is Military Spouse Day and one of our very own (the brown one) is the loving, supporting, proud wife of one great Army Lieutenant. So thank you to the hardworking servicemen and women, and also a BIG thanks to their husbands and wives who support them every day.

TWO.TWO (second observance of whacky holiday)

     We're only two weeks into April and it's already been a busy month! I hope you all enjoyed April 8th whether the day had anything to do with birds or not. Draw a Picture of a Bird Day is so appropriately placed at the beginning of spring when you really appreciate the little creatures finding their way back to your open window with a song. I'm so excited about all the entries we received- they are each so different and so great! I can't wait to share them with you, so I'll stop yapping. But I do want to wet your whacky holiday taste buds by making you aware of a few other great holidays this month: April 13th is Scrabble Day, April 14th is Reach As High As You Can Day and April 28th is shared by Kiss Your Mate Day and Great Poetry Reading Day (both of which I will be observing given that I've got a kissable mate who happens to write great poetry, fabulous) AND it's BLONDE'S BIRTHDAY! We'll be announcing the BIRD winner TUESDAY so check back!

TWO.ONE (first observance of whacky holiday) -- RED

First, I would like to extend my sincerest apology to my incorrectly promoting the 24th as National Waffle Day - when in reality, the 25th was INTERnational Waffle Day. Please accept this, my promise to more carefully observe the calendar from this point forward. That said, here's a tale of our attempt to celebrate Waffle Day one day early...

I carefully scheduled my lunch hour so Ben and I could appropriately celebrate the holiday at an extra special waffle venue - Taste of Belgium -- nestled in the fabulous North Market, downtown Columbus. We'd passed by them several times, but never stopped to sample their personal-sized Belgium delicacies. I had my camera,

meter money, and had even taken a bit longer to get dressed that morning because of the possibility of a mini waffle-photo-shoot (I know, I know). We park, we pay, we enter, I'm starving.... they're gone. That's right, a carefully measured square lot lay empty between a  gourmet

popcorn stand and a bakery. I was forlorn to say the least. Now how was I supposed to observe Waffle Day and then suffer from a sugar coma at work two hours later?! My lunch hour was half over and I settled for a lame hamburger and frosty combo before heading back to work.

Not an hour later, I was bombarded with text messages correcting my holiday observances- Waffle Day was tomorrow! Sweet glory, there was still time. I called Ben to share the news and in turn, he informed me that the Taste of Belgium had relocated to the one corner we by-passed in the North Market. Tomorrow it was.

Following work the next day, we returned to the North Market and informed the employees at The Taste of Belgium that it was, indeed, International Waffle Day - they had no idea, which is a shame. I had a delicious strawberry and cream waffle while Ben enjoyed a chocolate version. Our friend Beth went with one of their fabulous spinach crepes. A yummy time, had by all.

Just for the record, today is National Joe Day which gives a break to people who don't really like their name. It's a chance to go by "Joe" and have no questions asked.

Our next holiday is just around the river bend - April 8th is Draw a Picture of a Bird Day. And let's just say, a little birdie told me that there will be contests and prizes involved... get ready.
